A Novice at the Opera
A Review by
Larry Crouse

How did a guy, born in the farmland of Iowa in the center of the U.S., wind up in Dublin, Ireland, attending “Faust” the opera?

I’ll spare you the details of my life and fast forward to a conversation I had with a talented young Tenor last October.

I lamented to him the loss of part of my hearing and that I now notice that I can’t always understand the lyrics of songs, and that I find myself leaning back at concerts and letting the music, both vocal and instrumental, wash over me.

Anthony commented that I would probably enjoy opera, because it is sung in a different language anyway, and the combination of voices and instrumental music would be extra enjoyable since I wouldn’t be trying to understand each word.

He was right.

This evening’s opening night of “Faust,” with Anthony Kearns as the young Faust, completely entranced me.

All I heard was music: the words didn’t matter, but the quality of the voices certainly did!

Our friend Anthony was in wonderful voice tonight, and he was in good company. The entire ensemble of tenors, basses, baritones, mezzos, and sopranos, combined with a fabulous orchestra to make a glorious sound. His companions were very talented and so I heard the best of music, and let it wash over me like an Irish spring rain.

Thank you, Anthony, for suggesting opera. This may very well become my favorite music! There was no doubt I was experiencing the very best this evening.

Bravo, young man, you were great!
