The "newest" Irish Tenor, Karl Scully, was born in Limerick on the tenth day of June, 1978. He spent his young years moving with his family all over the globe, living in Africa, Texas, Indonesia, and San Francisco before returning to Dublin at 16. He remained there until moving to Alessandria, Italy, where he was based from December 2003 until December 2005.
Karl Scully carries impressive creditials. He spent two years of Post Graduate operatic studies in Genoa, Italy with Gabriella Ravazzi, preceeded by the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin, where he studied under both Dr.Veronica Dunne and Suzanne Murphy. He has been a multiple prizewinner at competitions across Ireland in opera, oratorio, French song, and traditional Irish music.
Karl has sung Albert in "Albert Herring" at the NCH in Dublin, Paolino in "Il Matrimonio Segreto" and Ferrando in "Cosi Fan Tutte," both in Orvieto, Italy. With Lyric Opera North Belfast, he sang the role of Dan Cairio in Bizet's "Carmen."
Scully was resident tenor in Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Italy, where he sang solo roles with world famous artists including American bass Samuel Ramey. He also portrayed Count John McCormack in the film "Nora." Scully has performed solo engagements in the Teatro Carlo Felice, Genoa, Italy, National Concert Hall, RDS, Dublin Castle, Bank of Ireland Arts Centre, Mansion House, Christ Church Cathedral, The Helix, Dublin and The Waterfront, Belfast.
In June 2003 and 2004 Karl was awarded the CDVEC Bursary for Advanced Musicians studying abroad, and in 2005 was awarded a scholarship for most promising young artist at the Spazio Musica Orvieto International Opera Festival Umbria, Italy.
Karl was chosen as the Irish tenor representative along with ten singers worldwide to participate in The Wexford Opera Festival Young Artists Development Programme this April. Spring 2006 performances included a concert celebration of the life and works of post-romantic female French composer Mel Bonis in the celebrated concert venue Le Moulin D'Andee in Normandy, France, MarlayMozartFest2006 in Marlay House Dublin, and CarlingfordMozartFest2006 in Holy Trinity Heritage Centre, Carlingford.
Anthony Kearns and Finbar Wright invited Karl to join them in The Irish Tenors for two tours of the U.S. in 2006, as well as a series for RTÉ in summer 2006.
